Compaction Setup
Paving Checklist
- Verify available rollers for project.
- Verify all rollers are maintained, greased, fueled, and fully operational including pads, scrapers, water system, prior to starting. (keep spare nozzles available)
- Verify mix type, thickness, width, and target density.
- Estimate roller production rate (speed and coverages) and compare to project production rate. See balance production rate.
- Determine number of rollers, position in rolling train (breakdown, intermediate, finish) and rolling pattern.
- Field QC Technicians must work closely with roller operators to achieve density and maintain smoothness.
- Use infrared temperature guns to establish working temperature range for each roller.
- Establish rolling pattern at beginning of new mix, layer, and width to verify roller pattern for each roller. Use density gauge to establish peak density and establish number of passes/coverages for each roller.
- Thicker lifts can compact easier.
- Thicker lifts take longer to cool. Internal temperatures.
- Thicker lifts are more easily constructed and successful in a confined location, i.e. a mill and fill.
- A single thicker lift may not ride as smooth as multiple lifts.
- Milled surfaces generally require less compaction effort but often call for heavier tack coat rates.
- Rolling pattern will need to be adjusted based on lift thickness.
