PFC 342
Paving Checklist
Item 342 – Porous Friction Course (PFC)
Construction Tips:
- Production: Multiple cold feed bins for same coarse aggregate, watch max temperatures, drain down, storage, develop a drum cleanout SOP for switching to specialty mixes. Caution when switching mixes same shift, fibers, lime?, lower production rates, verify aggregate supplier’s capacity to produce for entire project.
- Trucking: tight tarps, truck bed cleanup prior to loadout. Consider impact of long haul on temperature.
- MTV/Shuttle Buggy: Recommend dumping initial half-loads to prevent rapid cooling, use dump head not pickup head.
- Paving: Don’t tack vertical edges between PFC mats, limit to peak paving season, outside edge joint treatment, drainage, curb and gutter, superelevation, rapid temperature loss.
- Compaction: Don’t vibrate, no rubber tire, rapid cooling, steel wheel rollers on static mode/spray nozzles well maintained, wheel release agent/soap, cover the mat quickly, don’t move equipment on fresh PFC, less roll down.
- Handwork: Minimize handwork due to rapid cooling and texture differences.
- Testing (QC/QA): Water flow test in lieu of cores.
- HG Binder: Not recommended – use 344 Superpave.
