Paving Checklist

Item 346 – Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA)

Construction Tips:

  • Production: Watch max temps, drain down, silo storage levels, drum cleanout SOP, dust return, caution when switching mixes same shift, fibers, lime, lower production rates, stockpile management, verify aggregate supplier’s capacity to produce for entire project.
  • Trucking: Tight tarps, drain down, truck bed cleanup, consider impact of long haul on temperature, truck balancing imperative to not having mix sit waiting to be discharged.
  • MTV/Shuttle Buggy: Recommend dumping initial half-loads to prevent rapid cooling.
  • Paving: Limit to peak paving season, stiff mix, fat spots, chunks.
  • Compaction: No rubber tire, can be harder to compact, may require multiple roller combinations, with or without oscillation capability, consistent monitoring of temperature for compaction time, fat spots.
  • Handwork: More difficult, minimal.
  • Testing (QC/QA):  Density/compaction readings, thermal profiles, segregation profiles.
