TBFC 348
Paving Checklist
Item 348 – Thin Bonded Friction Course (TBFC)
Construction Tips:
- Production: Caution when switching mixes in the same shift, lower production rates, TBFC-see PFC, temperature control. Verify aggregate supplier’s capacity to produce for entire project.
- Trucking: Tight tarps, consider impact of long haul on temperature.
- MTV/Shuttle Buggy: Recommend dumping initial half-loads to prevent rapid cooling
- Paving: Limit to peak paving season, spray paver option, bonding course, bonding layer, see PFC above, watch joints closely.
- Compaction: Less roll down, fat spots.
- Handwork: Difficult due to rapid cooling, avoid if possible/thin lifts.
- Testing (QC/QA): Water flow – no cores.
- HPG Binder – Seek MTD Approval – See HPG tips.
