Paving Checklist

Item 347 – Thin Overlay Mixes (TOM)

Construction Tips:

  • Production: Caution when switching mixes in same shift, SOP for drum cleanout, temperature control.
  • Trucking: Tight tarps, consider impact of long haul on temperature.
  • MTV/Shuttle Buggy: Recommend dumping initial half-loads to prevent rapid cooling.
  • Paving: Higher minimum ambient paving temps, limit to peak paving season, spray paver option, bonding courses, avoid windy days due to rapid cooling, chunks, watch joints closely.
  • Compaction: Rapid cooling, potential tearing, less roll down, fat spots.
  • Handwork: Minimize, difficult due to rapid cooling, avoid if possible/thin lifts.
  • Testing (QC/QA): Water flow – no cores.
