{"id":44,"date":"2024-05-03T19:36:30","date_gmt":"2024-05-03T19:36:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pavechecklist.wpenginepowered.com\/?post_type=checklist&#038;p=44"},"modified":"2026-09-04T02:19:24","modified_gmt":"2026-09-04T02:19:24","slug":"paver-operation","status":"publish","type":"checklist","link":"https:\/\/checklist.texasasphalt.org\/?checklist=paver-operation","title":{"rendered":"Paver Operation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Verify spread rate, slope, and width to required cross sections.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) \u2013 Run first 3-4 loads hotter to heat up equipment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maintain proper height of material in hopper or hopper insert \u2013 <em>do not empty hopper between loads<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep the Head of Material in the auger chamber constant. <em>Strive for plus or minus 1 inch from center of auger shaft.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adjust feeder controls to keep augers turning 80-100% and 20-40 rpm.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adjust or match height\/slope of extensions to screed to eliminate screed extension lines\/marks in mat.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When using grade and or slope control, adjust screed controller, not manual thickness screw.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Routinely:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Observe HMA being discharged into hopper or insert for changes in characteristics of the mix.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check temperature of mix.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check texture of finished mat edge-to-edge and station-to-station.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strive for uniformity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Verify width, thickness, cross slope to match target.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Verify spread rate or yield to match target.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pave at a constant speed (See <a href=\"https:\/\/pavechecklist.wpenginepowered.com\/?checklist=balancing-operations\" data-type=\"checklist\" data-id=\"19\">Balancing Production Rates<\/a>) and use rapid stop\/start if trucks run out. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Engage hydraulic assist to lock screed lift cylinders when speed slows\/stops to keep screed from settling in mat.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Switch screed to float when paving.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adjust the screed width during paving to minimize joint overlap and eliminate raking\/luting of joint.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fix mat defects from pavement edge with lute and enough mix to fill \u2013 <em>do not broadcast or backscatter mix on pavement surface.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use Lute\/Rack to remove oversize materials and discard for repairs or patches.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not walk on uncompacted asphalt mat.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep screed walkway clear.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At end of shift, remove buildup of cold asphalt from hopper, conveyors, augers, screed, and pivot areas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Park equipment in safe zone.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Collect all delivery tickets, verify loads, quantities, and paved areas at end of each shift.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"featured_media":0,"template":"","checklist_category":[6],"class_list":["post-44","checklist","type-checklist","status-publish","hentry","checklist_category-construction"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/checklist.texasasphalt.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/checklist\/44","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/checklist.texasasphalt.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/checklist"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/checklist.texasasphalt.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/checklist"}],"version-history":[{"count":3,"href":"https:\/\/checklist.texasasphalt.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/checklist\/44\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":200,"href":"https:\/\/checklist.texasasphalt.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/checklist\/44\/revisions\/200"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/checklist.texasasphalt.org\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=44"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"checklist_category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/checklist.texasasphalt.org\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fchecklist_category&post=44"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
